When to Call an Electrician vs. a Handyman in Shreveport

A dead outlet. A ceiling fan that won't install. A breaker that trips every time the microwave and coffee maker run together. These problems feel like emergencies that need an electrician — but most of them don't. Calling a licensed electrician for a GFCI reset is like calling a cardiologist for a paper cut.

The Quick Answer: Repair vs. New Work
✓ BC Handyman — $75–200
- Dead outlets — replace or reset
- GFCI outlet installation / replacement
- Light switch replacement
- Dimmer switch installation
- Ceiling fan installation (existing box)
- Light fixture replacement
- Outdoor outlet replacement
- Doorbell repair / replacement
- Smoke / CO detector swap
✓ Licensed Electrician — $200–2,000+
- New circuit installation
- Breaker panel upgrade or replacement
- 240V outlet installation (dryers, EV)
- Aluminum wiring repair
- Whole-house rewiring
- Service entrance upgrade
- Outdoor lighting — new wiring
- Any work requiring permit
The pattern is consistent: if the wiring is already there and you're swapping a device, a handyman handles it. If new wire needs to be run, circuits added, or a permit pulled, that's a licensed electrician.
Common Scenarios: Who to Call
Dead outlet or dead room
Before calling anyone: find every GFCI outlet in the area (they look like regular outlets with two small buttons — "Test" and "Reset" — in the center). Kitchen, bathroom, garage, laundry room, and outdoor outlets in Shreveport homes often share a GFCI circuit. A tripped GFCI on one outlet kills all the downstream outlets on the same circuit.
Press the Reset button firmly until it clicks. If the outlets come back on, you're done. If the GFCI won't reset, or trips again immediately, the outlet itself is failing — a handyman replaces it for $75–125.
Also check: The breaker panel. A tripped breaker sits between ON and OFF — push it fully OFF then back to ON to reset. If it trips immediately again, something on that circuit is drawing too much load, or there's a short. Stop there and call for help.
Ceiling fan installation
If there's an existing ceiling light box where you want the fan, a handyman can install the fan — the wiring is already there. Most ceiling fan swaps take 45–60 minutes. Cost: $100–200 including the wiring connection.
Important: If there's no existing box or you want a fan where there's currently no ceiling fixture, new wiring needs to be run. That's a licensed electrician job.
Breaker that keeps tripping
A breaker that trips when a specific appliance runs on a specific outlet is almost always a circuit load problem — too many devices drawing current at once. The fix: distribute the load across circuits or upgrade the circuit. The latter requires an electrician.
A breaker that trips with no obvious load, or that feels hot to the touch, or that smells burnt — turn it off and call an electrician. Do not reset it repeatedly. Hot or burning breakers mean the breaker itself is failing, which is a fire risk.
Call a licensed electrician immediately if: A breaker is warm or hot to the touch, you smell burning plastic from the panel, or the breaker trips again within seconds of resetting.
Light fixture that buzzes or flickers
A dimmer switch controlling the wrong type of bulb is the most common cause of buzzing in Shreveport homes. LED bulbs are not all dimmer-compatible — and older dimmers weren't designed for LED. Swapping the bulb for a dimmable LED or replacing the dimmer with one rated for LED fixes this 80% of the time. Both are handyman jobs ($75–125).
Flickering that happens without touching a switch — especially if it occurs when a large appliance (AC, refrigerator, washing machine) starts — can indicate a loose neutral wire at the panel or a failing connection somewhere upstream. That requires an electrician.
Smoke detector or CO detector not working
Battery-powered detectors are DIY — swap the battery and test. If the unit is more than 7–10 years old, replace it entirely (the sensor degrades over time regardless of battery status).
Hardwired smoke detectors — the kind that's connected directly to your home's electrical system — need to be swapped correctly to maintain the interconnect (when one goes off, all go off). A handyman handles the swap for $75–150 per unit.

Electrical Issues Specific to Shreveport Homes
A few things about the Shreveport housing stock are worth knowing before any electrical work:
-
›
Aluminum wiring. Homes built from roughly 1965–1973 in Shreveport may have aluminum wiring for branch circuits. This is not inherently dangerous if properly maintained, but it requires special outlets and connections — and only licensed electricians with aluminum wiring experience should work on it. Ask Blake before scheduling if your home is from this era.
-
›
Older panels. Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) Stab-Lok panels are found in some older Shreveport homes. These panels have a documented history of breaker failure and are considered a fire hazard. If you see a tan or orange panel with "Stab-Lok" or "Federal Pacific" on it, schedule an evaluation with a licensed electrician. BC Handyman does not work on or from these panels.
-
›
Missing GFCI protection. Homes built before 1971 weren't required to have GFCI protection in kitchens; before 1975 for bathrooms; before 1978 for garages. If your Shreveport home was built before these dates and you've never updated the outlets, you likely have unprotected circuits in areas that should be protected. BC Handyman can install GFCI outlets throughout — $75–125 per outlet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a handyman do electrical work in Louisiana?
Yes, within limits. Louisiana allows handymen to replace like-for-like electrical devices — outlets, switches, light fixtures, ceiling fans — without an electrical contractor license. New circuits, panel work, service upgrades, and aluminum wiring repairs require a licensed electrician with permit. BC Handyman handles the first category and will tell you when the latter is required.
How much does electrical repair cost in Shreveport?
BC Handyman Services charges $75–200 for most electrical repairs: outlet or switch replacement $75–150, GFCI outlet replacement $75–125, ceiling fan installation $100–200, light fixture replacement $75–150. Licensed electricians in Shreveport typically charge $125–175 just to show up, before any labor.
Why does my outlet keep tripping or not work in Shreveport?
A dead outlet is most often a tripped GFCI on the same circuit — especially in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, and outdoor outlets. Look for a GFCI outlet nearby with Reset and Test buttons, and press Reset firmly. If the outlet still doesn't work, the outlet itself is worn or wired incorrectly — a $75–125 handyman repair.
Is a buzzing light fixture dangerous?
A mild hum from a dimmer is usually a bulb compatibility issue — swap for a dimmable LED or replace the dimmer. A loud buzz, burning smell, or flickering paired with buzzing is a warning sign of a loose connection or failing fixture. Get it looked at before it becomes a fire hazard.
